European Heritage Days 2019 – Rolling of barrels in the former wine market of Bercy, Paris
19 September 2019
The economic activity of Bercy peaked at the end of the 19th century, when the district became the biggest (greatest) wine-making platform of world. Bercy was then transformed into a working-class district in fashion where they came become intoxicated and dance. Diverse parties (holidays) as jousts on the water or races (shopping) of cyclists of barrels were organized there! At origin, it was a current (common) practice in the wine-making circles, that allowed to move barrels and barrels more easily. Today, to roll barrels became a shape of show practiced still by the cyclists of barrels of Lussac-Saint-Émilion, last club in France and in Europe. But, this picturesque and play activity is still present in France in many wine-making parties(holidays) of the end of grape harvests or of discovery of new vintage wine(year). Come alive again in Bercy Village, this tradition by trying to tame a barrel at least!
