The vine season starts early

The vines begin to budge. Depending on the region, the stages oscillate between “swelling of the buds” and “two spread leaves”.

The vines begin to budge. Depending on the region, the stages oscillate between “swelling of the buds” and “two spread leaves”.

The wine season starts. The vines resume their activity. In Côte d’Or, the buds swell. In the earliest situations (young vines, closed, complants) they reach the green tip stage. “Currently we are 10 to 12 days ahead of 2018 and 4 to 6 days behind the earlier years like 2017, 2014, 2012. The freshness of the next few days should slow the pace,” notes the Chamber Agriculture in its first Vitiflash newsletter of the season, dated March 25th.

In the Jura on Chardonnay and Poulsard, it is the stage “bud in cotton” that dominates.

In Maine and Loire, the plots are located between the stages “bud swelling” and “green tip”.

“One to two leaves spread” at the end of the latte in Bordeaux : in the vineyards of Bordeaux, the vines are on average between the “buds in cotton” and “green tip” stages. In the most advanced plots, the buds burst, some at the end of the slat being even at “one to two spread leaves”.

In Gascony, the campaign also starts early. Bud bursting is imminent: as of March 26, the stadiums oscillate between “winter bud” in the least advanced plots with “green tip”. In the earliest Chardonnays, the leaves begin to come out.

But it is in the south that the vines are the most advanced. “Chardonnays are already two leaves spread,” said Bernard Taïx, Etablissements Magne, a distributor based in the « Hérault » department.
