Christian Renonciat, master in the art of sculpting in trompe l’œil

27 June 2019

Twelve artists have been invited to Chaumont-sur-Loire for this new Art and Nature season, over which dream and poetry are set to reign supreme. Among those artists, the wood sculptor Christian Renonciat has become a master in the art of sublimating materials.

After studying philosophy in the Sorbonne, Christian Renonciat learns wooden crafts in an art workshop in Antibes for six years. In 1975, the artist opened his own workshop in Valbone where he created sculptures exposed for the first time in a Parisian gallery in 1978. His sculptures are now being exhibited all over the world.

Christian Renonciat shows in Chaumont-sur-Loire several works, or “visual games”, in a dialogue between contemporary art and antique furniture. Renonciat plays with the material and trick the eyes of visitors who think they are contemplating the softness of wool or the lightness of cardboard whereas Renonciat’s artworks are sculpted in wood.
