Barrel decoration commissioned from mosaic artist Sœur Samuelle

23 November 2023

For several years now, the Charlois Group has been commissioning artists to decorate a barrel from the workshops of Manufacture tonnelière La Grange. The idea is to magnify the work of its exceptional cooper craftsmen, while remaining faithful to its policy of supporting contemporary creation.

After Yannick Meziani’s tattooed barrels, Jordane Saget’s wavy lines and Louis Charlois‘ brightly colored pointillist universe, the decor for barrel 2023 will be entrusted to mosaic artist Sister Samuelle.

Sister Samuelle plans to create a mosaic decoration using different materials such as marble, hard stone, glass, wood, gold and gold leaf. The wooden tesserae will be created by the artist from alternative Oenosylva products. The different firing intensities (Light, Medium, Medium-long, Medium+) will enable him to play with contrasts and gradations of color.

A major innovation for this new collaboration: Sister Samuelle’s mosaic, which will not cover the entire surface of the barrel, will be displayed on the shell as well as inside the barrel. An artistic performance we can’t wait to discover and share with you!

Sister Samuelle’s barrel will be presented to the public at the 2024 edition of “Nuits des forêts – La forêt enchante Murlin” as part of an exhibition devoted to her work. The exhibition will also feature other works by the artist, made in part from oak supplied by the Charlois group of companies.
