Oak in the Service of Maturation
WHITE OAK was established in 2023 through the alliance between Charlois and Martell, the historic house of the Pernod Ricard group. This joint venture is built on a shared vision: securing the sustainable supply of oak and preserving forest resources, in service of long-aged cognacs.
WHITE OAK brings together three complementary houses, each carrying distinct expertise. Nièvre Merrain perpetuates the forestry and stave-making tradition, along with the rigorous selection of oak. Tonnellerie Leroi continues the heritage of crafting barrels destined for the finest crus. L’Atelier du Foudrier designs large-capacity vats and foudres, conceived to support long-term ageing.
Owned 51% by Charlois and 49% by Martell, WHITE OAK structures an organization dedicated to exceptional oak barrels and foudres. It builds on time-honoured craftsmanship, deep knowledge of the material, and constant attention to the specific requirements of cognac.
More than an industrial partnership, WHITE OAK embodies a shared respect for terroirs, for oak, and for the crafts that shape it. The barrels and large-format casks it produces accompany eaux-de-vie throughout their maturation, with a commitment to precision, durability, and continuity.

OUR HOUSES
WHITE OAK relies on three specialized houses based in France. Their complementary expertise ensures the quality, consistency, and reliability of the barrels and large oak casks produced.
Nièvre Merrain
In 1998, the Nièvre Merrain stave mill was established in Varzy, in the Nièvre region — about thirty kilometers from Murlin — by the Charlois family to meet the growing demand from coopers. Together with Maison Charlois, the two stave mills became the world leader in the production of French oak staves. Today, this facility produces staves for the Group’s cooperages. Like the other Charlois stave mills, Nièvre Merrain operates under the same stringent requirements regarding sourcing, quality control, traceability, and certifications.

Tonnellerie Leroi
The great French cooperage since 1735. Founded by Martell, the oldest House of Cognac, Tonnellerie Leroi holds rare expertise in the production of oak barrels dedicated to eaux-de-vie and liqueurs. From its roots in the Cognac region, its heritage and exacting standards have earned it recognition across vineyards worldwide. Oak selection lies at the heart of its craftsmanship, meeting the highest œnological standards of distillers and producers. To create this perfect harmony between oak and spirits, only staves sourced from the finest French oak are chosen for the production of barrels and vats. The nobility of the material is matched by the mastery of its expert coopers. By controlling the toasting flame according to the intended aging profile, the artisan cooper reveals the full aromatic subtlety of oak, imparting both character and strength to the spirit. Tonnellerie Leroi holds the “Entreprise du patrimoine vivant” (Living Heritage Company) label.

L'Atelier du Foudrier
Located in the Charente region, the unique craftsmanship and experience of this workshop’s master foudriers enable the creation of exceptional vats and large casks. After the rigorous selection of oak trees over 200 years old, sourced from France’s most majestic forests, the raw material is optimized to the highest level through Les Ateliers du Chêne before being shaped by skilled hands. An expression of luxury, French oak vats and large casks embody, within the wine industry and worldwide, the prestige and high standards of wines and spirits. L’Atelier du Foudrier holds the “Entreprise du patrimoine vivant” (Living Heritage Company) label.
