Vineyard on Montmartre hill

The 86^th edition of the Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre will be held this year from October 9^th to 13^th, under the sponsorship of Sophie Mounicot and Yann Arthus-Bertrand. This festival is one of the most important event in Paris, drawing 500.000 people each year.   Nuns of Montmartre, and religious of Saint-Denis, are at the origin of the development of the grapevine in Montmartre in the 13^th Century.   According to André Maillard, vineyards occupied almost three quarters of Montmartre hill during the 15^th century. In those days, there were 4.000 taverns in which 700 barrels were consumed each day. The vineyard disappeared in 1928 because of the land pressure and reborn in 1933 to its current location.
