Pascal Oudet will be exhibiting his work in the galleries of the Fonds Charlois for Art and the Forest in Murlin over the summer of 2025. The opening of the exhibition, in the presence of the artist, will take place during the La Forêt enchante Murlin festival on the weekend of 21st and 22nd June. A wonderful opportunity to meet and engage with this artist whose craftsmanship is truly one of a kind.
Pascal Oudet describes himself as a woodturner-sculptor. His works unveil the refinement of oak, the life within the oak itself. With an engineering background, he brings both an artistic and scientific perspective to wood — to its beauty, its structure, and its properties. Pascal Oudet casts light on oak.
An Artist Working in Oak Lace “Woodturning has a magical quality. In five minutes, you can create an object. That’s what initially fascinated me — and still does.” A lathe and a few pieces of oak later, Pascal Oudet’s path changed direction. His creations met with unexpected success. The public was captivated. By chance — or instinct — the artist forged a distinctive style: oak lace.
His creations begin on a wood lathe, starting with a block of oak weighing several kilos, which he gradually shapes into a disc just 2 to 3 millimetres thick — a remarkable feat in itself. This is followed by a sandblasting process, in which the softer spring growth rings are removed, leaving the denser summer rings intact to preserve the tree’s natural structure.
“This transparency, this interplay with light it’s what I seek above all. I offer a vision of oak that is unusual, revealing both its stiffness and its flexibility. Each piece is unique, shaped with and according to the tree’s imperfections. I work with coarse-grained oak, unlike that used for cooperage.”
