To celebrate the Journées européennes du patrimoine 2023, the Fonds Charlois and the Manufacture tonnelière La Grange are inviting you to Murlin to learn more about its history and professions as well as the ancient rituals and savoir-faire of these outstanding artisan coopers.

This year, the European Heritage Days will be held on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 September 2023 with a focus on “Living Heritage” and “Sport Heritage”. “Living Heritage” encompasses the practices, expressions, knowledge and savoir-faire passed on from generation to generation which are constantly recreated through song, dance, rituals, celebrations, and traditional artisan savoir-faire as well as our knowledge of nature and the universe. This theme strikes a chord with the La Grange Cooperage whose coopers strive daily to keep the ancestral traditions of French barrel-making alive.

The La Grange coopers will be delighted to talk to you about their craft and explain the different stages involved in the production of oak barrels: the shaping and joining of the staves, assembly (known as ‘mise en rose’), bending, toasting on a brazier, heading and hooping.
This is a unique opportunity to learn more about the ancient skills and savoir-faire of these talented artisan coopers whose creations are made by hand using the highest quality oak staves. This “bespoke” approach gives rise to barrels worthy of ageing wines from the finest terroirs.

Tasting workshops of wines aged in oak barrels will also take place over this weekend. This is the ideal opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of wine whilst learning how to identify the aromas in wine and understand the organoleptic qualities imparted by their ageing in oak.

Free entry for visits to the Fonds Charlois exhibition areas and the La Grange production premises.

Booking is required for wine tasting workshops, limited spaces are available. Tasting times: 11 am, 3 pm and 5 pm (lasts around 1 hour).
