Eugène Charlois, ninth generation, was born in Chaulgnes on January 11, 1900, under the Third Republic, then presided over by Émile Loubet   Descendant of a line of splitters (fendeurs) from the Nivernais region, whose origins date back to the 17th century, it was only natural that Eugène turned to the trade of his ancestors. He opened his first workshop (Maison Charlois) in 1928 in Murlin, where the eponymous group carries out several activities, including the profession of merrandier (stave-maker).. We invite you today to (re)discover the story ofEugène Charlois, already recounted in January 2020 on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of his birth.     VVisual 1: Photograph by Raoul Saulnier d’Anchald of a splitter’s hut in the Bertranges Forest. When Eugène established his first workshop in Murlin in 1928, he was part of the shift toward sedentarization of primary wood transformation activities. Indeed, the last mobile sawmills and splitting workshops gradually disappeared throughout the first half of the 20th century.
